Abu Hurairah(ra) related that Allaah’s Messenger(saw) said: “There were two women & each of them had a son. A wolf came & took away the son of one of them. One said to the other, ‘it took away your son.’ & the other said, ‘No, it took away your son.’ they went to Dawood(as) for judgement, & he ruled for the older of the two. Then they went to Sulaiman bin Dawood(as) & informed him of what happened. He said, ‘Bring to me a knife & i will cut him in two.’ The younger of the two women said, ‘Do not do so, may Allaah have mercy on you, for he is her son.’ Then Sulaiman(ra) (knowing the love of a mother), ruled for the younger of the two women.”

‘Ali bin Fudail related that he heard his father say to Ibn Mubarak, “You order us to seek little from this world, yet we see you trading in merchandise. Please explain how you reconcile one with the other?” He said, “O Abu ‘Ali, i do so only to protect myself (from begging), to be genorous to my family, & to use wealth to help me in obedience to my Lord.” ‘Ali said, “O Ibn Mubarak, if you achieve all of that, then your way of earning & spending are both noble indeed!”

‘Ali bin Abi Talib(ra) went to Ash’ath to console him upon the death of one of his sons. He said, “If you are sad, then you are deserving of mercy, but if you are patient, then Allah gives you something in place of what was lost or destroyed. & know that if you are patient, everything that was destined for you & preordained for you will occur & you will be rewarded, inshAllaah. If you complain an are hopeless, then likewise all that was destined for you will occur, except that you will be blamed for your impatience at Allaah’s Will.”

A man went to Ibn ‘ Aqeel & said, “Whenever i plunge myself two or three times into a river to take a bath, i am not sure wther the water has reached every part of my body, & am consequently unsure whether i have purified myself. What should i do?” He said, “Do not pray.” “Why do you say that?” Ibn ‘ Aqeel answered, “Allaah’s Messenger(saw) said, ‘The pen is raised from three: from the childhood until he reaches adulthood, from the one who is sleeping till he wakes up, & from the insane man until he regains his senses.’ & whoever plunges himself into a river once, twice, & then three times, yet still feels that he has not taken a shower, is insane.”

When ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul-’ Aziz(ra0 was appointed as caliph, he began with cases related to transgression against the right of others. He began with his family & those closest to him. His family gathered together to meet with his aunt, whom he honoured an revered. They asked her to intercede for them regarding that which he intended to do, & when she spoke to him about the matter, he said, “Indeed Allah’s Messenger(saw) followed a way, & when he died, his companions followed the same path that the Messenger(saw) followed. When the matter was then taken up by others, they dragged it to the right & left of that path, & by Allaah, if my life is prolonged, i will return the matter to the path that Allaah’s Messenger(saw) & his companions followed.”
